California Enacts New Youth Tech Safety Laws

California Governor Gavin Newsom signed 13 bills on September 10, 2026, targeting youth safety online. One law prohibits social media platforms from offering addictive features, such as infinite scroll and autoplay, to users under 16. Another measure mandates that AI chatbot operators implement mental health resources, safety protocols for self-harm, and break reminders for minors.

The legislation also requires AI companies to conduct independent child safety audits and annual risk assessments.
