Google to Test AI Computing in Orbit

Google is scheduled to launch a prototype satellite on October 1 as part of its Project Suncatcher initiative. The mission, conducted in partnership with Planet, will utilize a SpaceX Transporter 18 rideshare flight to test whether Google’s TPU AI chips can operate in space. The refrigerator-sized satellite is designed to evaluate the feasibility of hosting machine learning infrastructure in orbit.

The company plans to follow this test with a 2027 milestone involving two additional satellites and high-bandwidth laser links.
