Four U.S. states are seeking $1.4 trillion in penalties from Meta, alleging the company designed Facebook and Instagram to addict young users. The figure, disclosed in a court filing, nearly matches Meta’s $1.5 trillion market capitalization.

Meta called the demand unprecedented and unsupported by evidence. The case heads to trial in August, where 29 states will also pursue claims regarding children’s data privacy and platform safety.
