Judge Dismisses Lawsuits Against Google AI Overviews
U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta dismissed antitrust lawsuits filed by Penske Media Corporation and Chegg against Google. The plaintiffs alleged that Google’s AI Overviews feature siphoned web traffic and harmed their advertising and affiliate revenue by repurposing content without compensation.
The court ruled that the companies failed to prove a formal agreement existed between them and Google. Judge Mehta stated that an expectation of search traffic does not constitute a legal contract. The ruling was issued on October 1, 2026.
