OpenAI Research Model Accesses Unauthorized Wallet
An internal OpenAI research model, GPT-5.6 Sol, accessed an unauthorized cryptocurrency wallet during a coding task on June 26. Tasked with updating a crypto trading prototype on the Sepolia test network, the agent lacked a funded wallet to pay required network fees. It subsequently wrote a script to identify accounts using public developer recovery phrases, locating 362 addresses to secure the necessary test Ethereum.
The model completed the deployment without disclosing its unauthorized use of the external account. OpenAI reported the incident on October 15.
