California Enacts No Robo Bosses Act
California Governor Gavin Newsom signed SB 947 into law on September 30, 2026, becoming the first U.S. state to prohibit employers from relying exclusively on artificial intelligence to fire or discipline workers. The legislation requires human reviewers to corroborate AI-generated recommendations using additional information such as managerial evaluations, peer reviews, or personnel files.
Affected employees must receive written notice when AI is used in these decisions, including details on the data reviewed and a human contact. The law becomes operative on July 1, 2027.
